"To the light" by Yoko Ono at The Serpentine Gallery
It is hard not to
mention Yoko Ono. Most of the people know her as a widow of John Lennon and
accuse her in a breakdown of "The Beatles" but they could hardy think
that this Japanese woman is a modern artist. She is grown up with influence of
American culture and friendship with Andy Warhol. She is unique.
There
is a little bit of freakiness in her and because of this you want to know more
about this legend. She has a lot of intriguing facts in her biography and only
mentioning her name you can feel a spirit of 60s and 70s in the air with
"The Beatles" songs and feeling of never-ending freedom.
Yoko
Ono didn't have any exhibitions in London for over 10 years and only now she
decided to organize a retrospective in the Serpentine Gallery where she thinks
about the scale of her influence on the modern art. Personally, I suppose that
mostly her art is influenced by life with Lennon. On her Retrospective you can
see her 1st works. The most catchy is the installation because of which she met
with Lennon - ladder with a magnifying glass on top. Nowadays, however this
piece of art is even not allowed to touch, whereas many years ago you could
climb there are see with a magnifier what was written on the floor from the
height. You may be not impressed by this installation, but you will be if you
know the story behind.
Seems
that all her works are linked to John... life which was inspiring for her.
Sometimes you realize that there is too much Lennon for you. But nothing is
much when it is about "The Beatles". Uncountable quantity of his
photos, slow-motion films with his smile, imprint of his shoes. The main values
are communicated through the exibition - love and piece. Values they used to
sing in "Imagine".
This
is an interactive exibition where you can be heard. They want you to
participate and she does as much as possible for you to be a part of the
installation. You can leave your footprint or collect a puzzle peace to create
a big picture after with other people who came to see her art. Seems like the Lennon
spirit is everywhere. If you would have an opportunity to come- come. It is
more than art, it is reunion and a breath of freedom which people nowadays are
forget about.
